In response to last night’s fatal shooting at the Wood Village Town Center, Mayor Jairo Rios-Campos released the following statement:
Today, our community is mourning a tragic and senseless loss of life. We are also grappling with the loss of the sense of safety that community members expect and deserve. Our hearts are with the victim’s family, friends, and all who have been impacted by this horrific act of violence.
For many, the Wood Village Town Center is more than a shopping destination: it is a gathering place where families shop, dine, and connect with neighbors. The violence that occurred there has shaken our community and disrupted people’s ability to go about their daily lives without fear.
One of government’s most fundamental responsibilities is protecting the safety and well-being of the people it serves. Community members should be able to visit their grocery store, enjoy a meal with family, and go about their daily routines safely. While no single policy can prevent every tragedy, communities are strongest when we support effective law enforcement, invest in prevention and intervention, and ensure that those in crisis have access to help before situations escalate.
While the investigation remains ongoing, law enforcement has indicated that the incident was not random, and a suspect is in custody. Even so, this tragedy has left a lasting impact on the victim’s family, witnesses, local businesses, and community members who were present or affected.
This tragedy is a reminder that violence can touch any community, regardless of size or location. Public safety requires a comprehensive approach that includes strong law enforcement, effective emergency response, access to mental health and crisis intervention services, support for victims, and resources that help prevent violence before it occurs. Communities are strongest when these systems work together. At every level of government, we must continue prioritizing public safety, behavioral health resources, victim services, and violence prevention programs.
We are grateful for the swift and professional response and lifesaving efforts of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Gresham Fire, and Gresham Police. Their actions under difficult circumstances reflect the dedication and commitment of the public safety professionals who serve our community every day. We also want to thank Fred Meyer for its care of shoppers and associates who were present during the event. Chik-fil-A for providing food to the first responders, and the other area businesses that ensured community members and staff were safe. The City of Wood Village remains committed to supporting efforts that enhance safety, strengthen community partnerships, and improve quality of life for all.
