For the past two years, the City has been working on solutions to our long-term needs and costs for public safety, specifically for fire and emergency medical services. The City has shared this work, including funding challenges, at community open houses over the past few months. A public safety levy was originally considered for the May election; however, after careful consideration, the City has decided to delay placing a levy on the May ballot.
This decision reflects what we heard directly from you, our community. Many community members shared concerns about the current economic climate and the financial pressures households are facing. Community members also raised important questions that deserve thoughtful answers before any vote occurs. These include whether and when a new fire station in or near Wood Village might be built, and what sustainable solutions look like beyond the near term.
At the same time, the City secured a five-year contract with Gresham Fire with more favorable terms than originally predicted. While significant funding challenges remain, this allows us time to continue working with our area partners to fully evaluate these issues, provide clearer information, and engage the community in meaningful discussion.
Delaying the May vote does not mean the City is stepping away from addressing public safety challenges. It means we are committed to doing this work carefully, transparently, and in partnership with the community, balancing immediate needs with long-term planning and fiscal responsibility.
We will continue to share updates, provide opportunities for public input, and work toward solutions that reflect both the needs and the values of our community.
