Description of Event

English Ivy threatens the survival of mature trees that make Donald L. Robertson Park the beautiful refuge that many Wood Village community members enjoy. The ivy encircling the trees into an eventual chokehold deprives trees of sunlight and water critical to their survival. These trees not only provide a shady path for dog walkers, runners, and disc golfers, but habitat for songbirds, raptors, and small mammals that is rare in the urban environment.

With each No Ivy Project, we are clearing English ivy from trees in select sections of the park. English holly, too. Eventually, we will tackle ivy on the forest floor.

When we clear a tree of English ivy, we use pruners and loppers to cut the ivy at ground level, and remove ivy to about shoulder to head high. Once the ivy is deprived of nutrients from the ground, it will die off higher in the tree. We also cut the ivy wrapping around the tree at ground level, and give the tree a slight clearing around it to give it breathing room from the ground-level ivy. A week later, that ivy is dead or dying---a marvelous and hopeful sight!
