Description of Event
Our battle against invasive English ivy is making a huge difference! This project is part of an ongoing effort to remove ivy from the mature trees at the park. The ivy in the trees where we have worked is already dead. This stand of trees dominated mostly by cottonwoods is critical habitat for a variety of songbirds and woodpeckers as well as Red-Tailed Hawks and small mammals. Freed from the chokehold of Ivy, the trees can get the water and sunshine for optimal health, and deny wildfire an easy pathway from the ground to the treetops.
During the project, we use pruners and loppers at ground level to remove ivy in a defined area of the park. Sometimes, we simply pull the Ivy off of the tree as far as it can go, and then cut it. Then, we try to create a barrier around the tree with no Ivy roots, which makes it harder for it to regrow.
